Single Records - Great Britain
Singles are sometimes known as “45s” owing to their forty-five rpm, and have one track on each side. During the 1960s singles were extremely popular on both sides of the Atlantic. Popularity tables or, as they are also known - charts - were compiled for them. Some “45s” were bought because of their beautiful sleeves. It was thanks to a single (the German single “My Bonny”) that the Beatles were introduced to Brian Epstein and went on to achieve world fame. The record companies of many countries throughout the world released singles. The best-known of them were Britain’s Parlophone (E.M.I.), Decca, America’s Vee-Jay, Swan, Capitol, MGM, the Canadian branch of the company, Capitol - Canada, Germany’s Polydor and Odeon, France’s Pathé-Marconi and several others. The singles were named after the track on the record’s A-side. There were exceptions, though, and a single would sometimes be given a name incorporating both tracks.
